Texas Territory
UT is coming off four straight 10-plus win seasons, three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths and four top three Big 12 finishes in a row. Texas has tallied victories in 22 of its last 34 matches and in six of its last nine.
The Horns return 17 letterwinners and 10 starters from 2003. Entering 2004, the Longhorns hold top 25 rankings from each of the four national preseason polls (No. 13 — NSCAA & Soccer Times, No. 4 — Soccer America & No. 8 — Soccer Buzz).
Nine of UT's 2004 opponents, including exhibition foe UCLA, are ranked among the top 25 in the four preseason national polls.
The Longhorns boast an all-time record of 5-5 (.500) in season openers.
Texas will open the 2004 season with four straight home matches, marking the first time that has happened since the 2000 campaign.
UT highlighted its 2004 preseason with a 4-1 exhibition win at UCLA (8/18). In that victory, four different Horns scored and Dana Hall made three saves.
With Texas' 2004 recruiting class (Carpenter, Kennedy, Imber & Perkins) ranking as the No. 3 recruiting class nationally according to Soccer America, the UT coaching staff has inked top five recruiting classes in four of the past five years.
While head coach Chris Petrucelli has led the U.S. Under-21 National Team to Nordic Cup titles the last two summers, at least two Longhorns have been a part of those squads (McDonald & Wilson — 2003; Thaden & Wilson — 2004).
Up next, the Horns continue their season-opening four-game homestand when they host Florida International in a 7:30 p.m. match at Myers Stadium. For tickets, call by phone at (512) 471-3333 / 1-800-982-BEVO or log on to www.TexasBoxOffice.com.
