Sheila Rice "Challenge to Excellence" Endowed Lecture Series for Women's Athletes

The Sheila Rice "Challenge to Excellence" Endowed Lecture Series for Women Athletes was a gift made to the Women's Intercollegiate Athletics Department by Margie and Cecil Hale to honor Dr. Sheila Rice, the first Directory of Academic Services for Women's Athletics.

This year's Lecture Series features Norma Cantu, Professor in the Department of Educational Administration and Law at The University of Texas and former assistant secretary for civil rights in the U.S. Department of Education. The event is scheduled for Tuesday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.

The first lecture was held in March, 1992. The historical list of lecturers includes:

1992 Anita DeFrantz, President of the Amateur Athletic Foundation of Los Angeles, a former Olympian, and a United States member of the IOC
1993 Dr. Barbara Jordan, former Professor of Public Policy at The LBJ School of Public Affairs at The University of Texas at Austin, and former U.S. Congresswoman from Texas
1994 Dr. Betty Sue Flowers, Distinguished Teaching Professor of English at The University of Texas at Austin
1995 Dr. Mary Steinhardt, Associate Professor of Kinesiology at The University of Texas at Austin
1997 Sarah Weddington, Adjunct Professor of Kinesiology of Government at The University of Texas at Austin and former member of the House of Representatives
1998 Red McCombs, owner of the Minnesota Vikings and generous benefactor of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women whose contributions include the Red and Charline McCombs Softball Field
1999 Ann Richards, former governor of Texas
2000 Roy Spence, founder of GSD&M Advertising and Texas-Ex
2001 Lecture series in hiatus (Women's Athletics Department participated in collaborative project with UT Department of Women's Studies)
2002 Lecture series in hiatus (Women's Athletics Department participated in collaborative project with UT Department of Women's Studies)
