Women's Athletics Director Chris Plonsky
3rd Year as Director of Women's Athletics
17th year at The University of Texas
Chris Plonsky is in her third year as women's athletics director, senior woman administrator, and director of men's/women's athletics external services at The University of Texas. She is in her 17th year of association with UT.
Plonsky directs UT's 11-sport women's athletics program. In addition, she supervises men's and women's athletics corporate sponsorship sales and fulfillment, as well as radio, tv and internet broadcasting. She also is the departments' liaison with UT's trademark and licensing director and supervises athletics marketing/promotions staff members.
UT Athletics works daily with multi-media rights vendor Host Communications, which does business in Austin as the Longhorn Sports Network (LSN). The six-member LSN staff produces and delivers conventional radio, satellite radio (via SIRIUS), internet audio, and regional and local television broadcasts of UT sports. The television component includes the Longhorns Sportscenter shows featuring football coach Mack Brown and men's basketball coach Rick Barnes. The LSN has extended television agreements on behalf of UT Athletics with Fox Sports Net Southwest and CSTV (College Sports TV), as well as Time Warner Cable and Austin station KTBC-TV (Fox, Channel 7) for extended coverage of UT sports.
The LSN staff also represents all corporate sponsorship sales for UT Athletics and the Frank Erwin Center, including those elements appearing in signage, game-day publications, consumer and retail promotions, and video. Plonsky is the contract liaison for those agreements, as well as those sold by Action Sports Media, a Portland, Ore.-based company for sponsorships sold on permanent electronic scoreboard signage within select UT Athletics facilities, including Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.
In September of 2004, the National Association of Collegiate Women Athletics Administrators (NACWAA) selected Plonsky as the 2003-04 NCAA Division1-A Administrator of the Year. The Administrator of the Year Awards are presented to NACWAA members for significant contributions made as an administrator of intercollegiate athletics. This award is presented annually to a NACWAA member in NCAA Divisions I-A, I-AA, I-AAA; Division II; Division III; NAIA/Junior/Community Colleges; and Conferences/Organizations.
In addition to her duties with Texas, Plonsky serves on the NCAA Division I Management Council. She chaired the group from January of 2003 through April 2004.
She also is a member of the National Football Foundation/College Football Hall of Fame Board of Directors, the Honda Broderick Award selection committee, the National Association of Collegiate Women's Athletics Administrators, and, since, 1996, the USA Basketball Executive Committee as vice-president for women's programs.
She is a former member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) Executive Committee and was president of the National Association of Collegiate Marketing Directors (NACMA) during the 1999-2000 academic year. In June 2003, she was inducted into the NACMA Hall of Fame.
Plonsky first came to UT in January of 1982 and worked 5.5 years as women's sports information director. She rejoined the UT athletics staff as Associate Athletics Director for External Services in 1993 after seven years with The Big East Conference. There, she served in public relations and administrative capacities. Plonsky also worked as women's SID at Iowa State from 1979-81 and at her alma mater, Kent State, from 1976-79.
A native of Greensburg, Pa., Plonsky earned her bachelor's degree in journalism from Kent State University in 1979. As a senior, she was editor of The Daily Kent Stater and was named Kent State's outstanding journalism graduate. Plonsky also was a three-year letterwinner in basketball (1975-78) and served as team co-captain during her junior season.
In Austin, Plonsky is a member of the Capital Area Crime Stoppers board and the University Federal Credit Union supervisory committee.
