- A three-year letterman in track and field for the Texas Longhorns
- Leadoff man for the Southwest Conference champion 440-yard relays in 1957, 1958, and 1959
- Also a part of the mile relay championship team in 1957 and 1958, as well as a member of the SWC 880-yard relay in 1957
- The most notable accomplishment in his career was helping to set the world record in both the 440- and 880-yard relays
- Served as a team captain along with Eddie Southern in 1959
- Member of The Friar Society and the Texas Cowboys and has remained involved with UT Athletics since he graduated
