• A three-year letterman at Texas and team captain in 1956
• One of the leading scorers at the 1955 SWC championship meet who helped lead the Longhorns to a conference championship
• Began his head coaching career in 1961 at Rice University
• Subsequently coached at Arkansas, Texas A&M, and then began coaching at Texas in 1971
• During his seven seasons as a head coach at Texas, he produced 21 SWC Championships and 12 All-Americans.
• Was instrumental in the formation and development of the first University of Texas Women's Swimming team
• He went on to be a principal at Eanes Junior High in 1978, then principal and superintendent at Westlake High School before finishing his career as superintendent at Sweeny (Texas) High School.
