• As a freshman in 1984-85, won 500- and 1,650-yard freestyle events in leading UT to NCAA team championship
• Earned seven All-America honors through sophomore and junior seasons as UT also won two more NCAA team titles
• Won gold medals in 400- and 800-meter freestyle events at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics
• Captured U.S. national championships in the 500-, 1,000- and 1,650-meter freestyle events in 1982
• Named Swimming World Magazine's American Swimmer of the Year in 1983
