DALLAS, Texas -- The Big 12 Conference has announced that its 2007 football championship game will be held in San Antonio, Texas, and the '08 men's and women's basketball championships will take place in Kansas City, Missouri.

This marks the third time San Antonio will play host to the Dr Pepper Big 12 Football Championship game. In 1997, Nebraska defeated Texas A&M and in 1999 the Cornhuskers upended Texas. The 2007 game will again be held at the 65,000-seat Alamodome.

The Phillips 66 Big 12 Basketball Championships return to Kansas City for the eighth time in 2008. The City hosted the first six Big 12 Basketball Championships from 1997-02, and most recently in 2005. In 2008 the men's championship will be held at the Sprint Center, while the women will again be headquartered at Municipal Auditorium. Currently under construction, the Sprint Center is scheduled to open in October, 2007.

"I would like to thank the leadership of San Antonio and Kansas City for their proposals," said Big 12 Conference commissioner Kevin Weiberg. "In each community, several groups played a key role in securing its bid. Both cities have a rich history of staging Big 12 and national sporting events."

Big 12 championship sites in football and basketball are now secured to run concurrent with the Conference's contract with ABC/ESPN. The network's agreement with the Big 12 runs through the 2007-08 athletic season.

"I anticipate a pause before the Conference considers future championship sites," added Weiberg. "We should begin the process of looking at sites beyond 2007-08 sometime during the next academic year."

Weiberg also said the construction timeline for the Sprint Center allows enough cushion for the facility to be fully operational in time for the 2008 men's basketball championship.

"We have had discussions with the City regarding the timeline," said Weiberg. "All parties involved are aware of the schedule and have assured us that it can be met. We will rely on the City for updates and status reports as construction progresses."
