AUSTIN, Texas — In September of 2004, the University of Texas and Texas A&M University unveiled a new twist to the already storied rivalry between the NCAA men's and women's athletics competition the two schools – a challenge series entitled the State Farm Lone Star Showdown.

Seven months later, Texas has emerged with the inaugural Lone Star Showdown title, as UT clinched the 2004-05 rivalry championship when the Longhorns' women's golf team placed second to A&M's fifth-place finish at the Big 12 Golf Championship on Sunday (April 24).

Texas' second-place finish at the women's golf championship, held at the UT Golf Club, gave Texas an insurmountable edge in the State Farm rivalry series (10.5 to 4.0).

There are 25 scheduled UT-A&M contests this year, and each sport is worth one (1) point towards the Rivalry Series championship. A total of nineteen (19) points can be won.

The winner of regular season head-to-head game earns the point for its University.  If the teams split or tied in regular season competition, the point is split between the Universities.

The Texas "wins" in the Series this year came via: football, men's cross country, women's basketball, men's swimming and diving, women's swimming and diving, women's indoor track, men's indoor track, women's tennis and women's golf.

Additionally, each school received one-half point each in volleyball and men's basketball, as UT won a meeting and the Aggies won a game in the home-and-home series.

The Aggies' points have come from the volleyball and men's basketball contests and in winning the head-to-head point in women's soccer, women's cross country and men's tennis.

Sports which are still in State Farm Lone Star competition include softball, where UT holds a 0.5-0 lead with one game to play (at Texas A&M on Wednesday, April 27); and baseball, men's golf and men's outdoor track and women's outdoor track, which have yet to compete head-to-head.

Winning results from seven head-to-head match-ups accrue one point each: football, soccer, men's swimming & diving, women's swimming & diving, baseball (best of three-game series victor), men's tennis, and women's tennis. Winning results from regular season head-to-head match-ups gain one-half point in men's basketball, women's basketball, volleyball and softball - as these sports hold a home-and-home series each season.

Higher team place standings from Big 12 Conference Championship events in these sports accrue one point: men's indoor track & field, women's indoor track & field, men's cross country, women's cross country, men's outdoor track & field, women's outdoor track & field, men's golf and women's golf.

More than 1,300 men and women student-athletes compete for Texas and Texas A&M. Both universities boast huge living alumni bases – 415,000 for UT and more than 250,000 for Texas A&M – and a significant following from supporters throughout the state and the nation.

The Lone Star Showdown is supported through a major sponsorship from State Farm Insurance Companies. State Farm has a long history of supporting Texas, Texas A&M, NCAA intercollegiate sports programs and the University Interscholastic League (UIL) of the state of Texas. The sponsorship covers the 2004-05 and 2005-06 academic years.
