AUSTIN, Texas -- UT Athletics recently took time to honor graduating student-athletes at the annual Senior Lunch. Academic Services organized the gathering for student-athletes who will graduate in Spring, Summer or Fall 2010.

"It's special to acknowledge this transitional stage in their lives," said Dr. Randa Ryan, Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student Services. "Sometimes we don't acknowledge the student side as much as we do the athlete side, and this gives us a moment to pause and congratulate our seniors on their special journey."

Women's Swimming and Diving senior Alex Basso told the crowd, which included both the men's and women's athletics councils, that the lessons she learned at Texas will "apply to everything I do the rest of my life."

Football's Sam Acho said his time at The University has made him a better leader.

"Everything I've done in the classroom, in study halls and on the field has helped me become the person I am today," Acho said.

Brian Davis, Associate Athletics Director for Football Student Services, said the occasion reminds everyone that four to five years -- the time of most undergraduate careers -- go by very quickly.

"It's important to appreciate their success as students and athletes, and congratulate them on their focus to graduate," Davis said.

UT president Bill Powers and athletics directors DeLoss Dodds and Chris Plonsky also addressed the crowd.

"This group gives me great confidence in the future of our state and the world," Powers said. "You make me so proud, and The University so proud, for all that you do."
