Academic and Student Services
The Department of Intercollegiate Athletics at The University of Texas at Austin has a comprehensive Life Skills Program committed to the welfare of the student-athlete. The Longhorn PRIDE program (Personal Responsibility in Developing Excellence) has five major components which are designed to meet the unique needs of student athletes. The greatest strength of the Longhorn PRIDE program is its true focus on students. The program is based on needs identified by student-athletes and assessments by experts. Programs are constructed and designed with the student-athlete as their primary focus. The Longhorn PRIDE program is an integral part of the life of student-athletes at The University of Texas at Austin. The Longhorn PRIDE program has a comprehensive approach to providing educational experiences and services which focus on the individual. The program is comprised of five areas: The student-athletes' direct involvement in these five areas provides the opportunities to develop important personal skills during college years. Additionally, UT provides all its student-athletes with the Student-Athlete Handbook, a comprehensive guide to UT Athletics Student Services. The Longhorn PRIDE program helps the student-athlete to acquire increasing levels of independence and responsibility by enhancing personal growth during their time at The University of Texas at Austin. The Health Professions Advisory Program
The University of Texas at Austin offers educational enrichment activities specifically designed for Longhorn student-athletes interested in pursuing a career in medicine. These activities are coordinated through the Health Professions Advisory Program sponsored by the Division of Athletic Training/Sports Medicine in cooperation with the Student-Athletes' Care Collaborative (SACC). SACC is comprised of a network of physicians who play an active role in maintaining, enhancing, and promoting the health and well being of our student-athletes. The program affords student-athletes with the opportunity to gain knowledge and practical experiences through the shadowing of local physicians affiliated with the SACC network. Many disciplines are represented in an effort to diversify the clinical experiences and expose student-athletes to as many individual professionals as appropriate. The fields of study include a broad and diverse range of options including cardiology, dentistry, dermatology, endocrinology, family practice, gastroenterology, gynecology, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, and physical medicine and rehabilitation. The primary objective of the program is to assist student-athletes in gaining insight into the practical aspects of healthcare. Our comprehensive program will help you build rapport with physicians and other healthcare professionals, provide guidance developing interpersonal skills, and counsel you in heightening your understanding of the breadth of career opportunities available in medicine. By applying the expansive experiences available to you at The University of Texas, we firmly believe you will be prepared to make your dream of becoming a physician or dentist a reality.
