Academic and Student Services: Directors and Staff

Dr. Randa RyanDr. Randa Ryan, Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director for Student Services
Dr. Randa Ryan began her service with UT Athletics in 1985, and since 2005, she has served as the Senior Associate Athletics Director, overseeing the academic support staff and student services of all sports at UT Austin, with the exception of football.

A nationally-recognized author and lecturer on student-athlete health, exercise, nutrition and performance issues, Dr. Ryan was promoted to Assistant AD in 1992 and Associate AD in July 1998, before assuming her title of Senior Associate AD in March 2005. Prior to that, she served as Women's Athletics Performance Team Director (1988-92) and Women's Assistant Swimming Coach (1985-88).

Dr. Ryan has also served on numerous national committee assignments, including the NCAA Life Skills Committee, the Division I-A Athletics Directors Life Skills Committee and the American College of Sports Medicine Women's Issues Committee.

Dr. Ryan earned her Master's degree and Doctorate from UT Austin. Her Master's degree is in Exercise Physiology and her Doctorate is a Multidisciplinary degree in Psychology, Nutrition and Exercise Physiology. She also has done extensive research and programming regarding the mental health needs of elite athletes.

Dr. Ryan and her husband, Steve Klepfer, have four sons -- Seth, Rhett, Kasey and Shea.

Brian DavisBrian Davis, Associate Athletics Director/Football
Brian Davis begins his 15th year serving University of Texas student-athletes and his 25th year working directly with Head Coach Mack Brown. As Associate Athletics Director for Football Student Services, Davis oversees a program and staff that provides academic and personal development programming and to UT football student-athletes beginning with recruiting and continuing through graduation and their respective career goals and opportunities.

With over 30 years of experience, Davis has worked with student-athletes in almost every collegiate sport, but has worked closely with football for his entire career. A track student-athlete during his undergraduate days at Iowa State University, Davis graduated with a B.A. in political science in 1981 and continued on at ISU, receiving an M.S. in higher education administration in 1983. He began his work as an athletics academic advisor as a graduate assistant in May of 1982, providing counseling and advising to Cyclone football and basketball student-athletes. In 1984, Davis also served as assistant track and field coach to Hall of Fame Head Coach Bill Bergan, assisting with long, triple, and high jumpers, as well as sprinters. In August of 1984, he began a 14-year stint at The University of North Carolina as Academic Coordinator, serving under a variety of titles until moving to Texas in 1998.

A member of the National Association of Academic Advisors for Athletics, Davis has served as an outside consultant for N4A certification at several schools, and recently participated as a panelist for NFL/NCAA Coaches Academy. On campus, Davis is a member of the Provost Council and is co-founder of Longhorn Leaders, a nationally-recognized program of leadership development and community service within the Austin Independent School District and surrounding communities. Off campus, Davis serves as civilian board member for CLEAT (Combined Law Enforcement Agencies of Texas) and is an Assistant Scout Master for Austin Troop 395.

Davis is married to Brenda Perry Davis, a speech therapist, and the couple has four sons, Spencer (20), Cameron (20), Kenan (14), and Graham (12).

Eric BeverlyEric Beverly, Assistant Athletics Director for Football Academics
Eric Beverly joined the Texas Football academic staff in the fall of 2012. He serves as Assistant Athletics Director for Football Academics. Before coming to Texas, Beverly spent nearly five years at the University of Georgia as coordinator of academics for football and academic counselor for soccer. He was responsible for the daily oversight and communication with regard to academic support and performance of all football and soccer student-athletes. During his time at Georgia, the football team recorded some of the highest team GPAs in the school's history. In addition, Georgia ranked in the top 10 in APR score among the nation's top 25 football teams.

Prior to his service at Georgia, Beverly played 10 years in the National Football League playing both offensive line and tight end. He began his professional career as an undrafted free agent with the Detroit Lions. After spending seven seasons in Detroit, he joined the Atlanta Falcons before retiring in 2007.

Beverly demonstrated his value and versatility on and off the field during his stint in the NFL. He completed the Harvard Business School's NFL Business Management and Entrepreneurial Program in 2006. His professional off-season experiences also included internships with the NFL league office and Kmart Corporation.

Beverly received his bachelor of science degree in business administration from Miami University (Ohio) in 1997. He was a four-year letterwinner and team captain for Miami's football team his senior season. He and his wife, Danielle, have one daughter.

Lara ConradyDr. Lara Conrady, Assistant Athletics Director for Student Servicess
Dr. Lara Conrady has been with UT Austin since the fall of 2000, and she currently works with Dr. Randa Ryan in project development. Conrady also assists student-athletes with resources, including textbooks and referrals.

Dr. Conrady coordinates annual events such as the New and Returning Student-Athlete Orientation, the Graduating Senior Luncheon and the annual Academic Awards Presentation. With a background in education and social work, Conrady is able to communicate with student-athletes as a key point of contact for the Student Services Office.

Dr. Conrady received her B.S. in Psychology from Texas A&M in 2000. She completed her Master's in Social Work and then her Doctorate in Higher Education Administration in 2007 at UT Austin.

Kat RichterKat Richter Hastings, Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services 
Kat (Richter) Hastings played softball at Texas from 1997-2001 and earned a B.A. in History in 2001. Hastings began her academic services career in 2002 as Dr. Randa Ryan's assistant and as an academic mentor.

A recipient of the Sears Directors' Cup postgraduate scholarship, Hastings pursued graduate work at Texas State University. In 2004, she earned her Master's degree in Counseling and Guidance with an emphasis in Student Affairs and transitioned to being an academic counselor.

Hastings specializes in academic eligibility, APR and graduation rates, recruiting, transitioning freshmen and transfer student-athletes, and academic reporting. She now serves as Assistant Athletics Director for Student Services. She began doctoral studies at UT in 2010, taking coursework in Kinesiology and American Studies. In 2011, her article with Dr. Jan Todd about an integrated girls' AAU track team in the 1960s was published in Iron Games History.

As a student-athlete at UT Austin, Hastings played in the 1998 Women's College World Series and three NCAA Regional tournaments (1998, 1999, 2000). She served as team captain for two years. In 2000, she earned Academic All-America and All-Big 12 honors. During her final semester, she was honored with the Lorene Rogers Scholar-Athlete Award, which is presented to the senior student-athlete with the highest overall GPA.

Hastings and her husband, Arthur, a doctor of physical therapy, live in Dripping Springs.

Annette Smith-KnightAnnette Smith-Knight, Director of Community Service
Annette Smith-Knight, an inductee into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame Class of 2013, works as the Community Service Coordinator. Smith-Knight helps coaches and student-athletes organize their efforts in the community with organizations like Habitat For Humanity and the Dell Children's Hospital.

Smith-Knight led the 1986 Texas Women's Basketball Team to an undefeated record and the program's first National Championship. Her 2,523 career points rank Smith-Knight as the all-time leading scorer in UT Austin history.

An All-American and two-time Southwest Conference Player of the Year, Smith-Knight was inducted into The University of Texas Women's Hall of Honor in 2002, and the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame in 2006.

Smith-Knight graduated from UT Austin in 1986 with a degree in Speech Communication.

Tina KienDr. Tina Kien, Academic Counselor and Director of Career Development
Dr. Tina Kien, the Director of Career Development, provides career services in the new AFTER TEXAS Career Center.

Dr. Kien began her career at UT Austin in 1981 in the Admissions Office as a transcript evaluator for international students. After working as a student-athlete mentor and earning her Master's degree, Kien became an academic counselor in the Student Services Office.

Dr. Kien received her degree in psychology from UT Austin in 1983, her Master's degree in Educational Psychology in 1992 and her Doctorate in Educational Psychology in 1996.

Marnie BinfieldDr. Marnie Binfield, Academic Counselor
Dr. Marnie Binfield graduated from UT Austin in 1997 with her B.A. from Plan II. She then attended San Diego State and received her M.A. in Women's Studies in 2002. Binfield later returned to UT Austin and in 2009 received her 22 August 2012 Doctorate in Radio-Television-Film after studying hip-hop culture, social justice politics and digital communities.

Dr. Binfield has many teaching experiences, and taught Writing, Women's Studies and Media Studies at San Diego State, Concordia, Southwestern, and UT Austin.

Dr. Binfield has served UT Athletics since 2005 as a mentor, tutor and now academic counselor. In addition, she serves as the academic mentor supervisor, assists in study hall planning, and oversees the Writing Program.

Alanna BitzelAlanna Bitzel, Academic Counselor/Football
Alanna Bitzel has been with The University of Texas at Austin since 2001. After receiving her B.A. in English, government, and psychology in 2005, Bitzel continued her graduate education at UT. In 2010, she earned her J.D. from the School of Law and her M.P.Aff. with a specialization in leadership and management from the LBJ School of Public Affairs.

Bitzel brings with her an extensive background and expertise in working with students on writing and managing writing programs. During her undergraduate and graduate careers at UT, Bitzel worked at UT's Undergraduate Writing Center (UWC), serving as a consultant, project group leader, assistant director, and outreach coordinator. While in this last role, she co-organized a collaborative effort between the UWC and the Texas Football academics center in which the UWC trains writing tutors for the football program to foster independent writing skills in student-athletes. Bitzel has also worked as an assistant instructor for UT's Department of Rhetoric and Writing. In addition, she has taught developmental reading classes for students of all ages.

Bitzel began working with the Football program in 2009 as a writing tutor and then as a reading specialist. She is now in her first year as an academic counselor. She supervises the Writing Lab, oversees tutor and mentor training and management, coordinates study hall, and develops programs to support student-athletes' reading and writing needs.

Jason BourgeoisJason Bourgeois, Academic Counselor
Jason Bourgeois began work as an academic counselor in 2008, and joined the Student Services Office with previous experience as an athletic mentor and student-athlete after playing baseball for San Jacinto Community College.

He received his B.S. in Health Promotion from UT Austin in 2007 and his Master's in Higher Education Administration in 2012.

Tina BoutelleTina Boutelle, Academic Counselor
Tina Boutelle is beginning her first year with the Student Services Office after four years serving as Director of Softball Operations and Camp Director on UT's Softball staff. She was previously an administrative assistant for the Department of Kinesiology and Health Education.

As a student-athlete, Boutelle led the Longhorns to two Big 12 Conference Championships, One Big 12 Tournament title and three trips to the Women's College World Series. In 2003 she was an All-Big 12 First Team selection. In addition, Boutelle has played five seasons with the Pro Fastpitch X-Treme Tour, during which time she traveled the country with professional softball players, allowing young athletes the opportunity to watch, learn, and interact with their favorite players.

Boutelle received her B.S. in Kinesiology from UT Austin in 2006.

Jean BryantJean Bryant, Academic Counselor/Football
Jean Bryant is in her 12th year as an academic/life skills counselor at The University of Texas and her 19th year as an academic advisor and instructor. A 1989 graduate of Ohio University, Bryant received her master's degree from Ohio University in 1990. She has two sons, Rodney and Kyle and one granddaughter, Jasmin.

Dr. Adam CreasyDr. Adam Creasy, Academic Counselor/Football
Dr. Adam Creasy is in his fifth year as an academic counselor and learning specialist for the Texas Football team. He helps coordinate the tutoring and mentoring services for the football academic center and serves as the liaison between the football academic center and the Office of Services for Students with Disabilities.

Creasy is a former member of the Texas Men's Swimming and Diving team. As a freshman he helped Texas win the 1996 NCAA Championship. He is a Southwest Conference individual champion and a UT letterwinner. He earned his B.A. in English, his M.A. in program evaluation, and his Ph.D. in educational psychology from UT.

Kelsey DavisKelsey Davis, Academic Counselor
Kelsey Davis began with the Student Services Office in 2006, and in addition to working as an academic counselor, she works on eligibility and recruiting.

Davis received a B.S. in Kinesiology with a focus in Sport Management from UT Austin in 2008, and her Master's in Higher Education Administration in 2011.

Johnathan EdwardsJohnathan Edwards, Academic Counselor
Johnathan Edwards earned his undergraduate degree in Sociology and Theology from Georgetown University, where he was a scholarship student-athlete on the Men's Basketball Team. He earned his Master's in Business Administration, focusing on Human Resources Management, from the University of Phoenix in 2005.

After playing professional basketball in South America and Europe for sixteen years, Edwards worked as a Financial Consultant with the Swiss firm Thema S.A. and coached the Men's and Women's basketball teams at Franklin College in Serengo, Switzerland.

Edwards began working for the Student Services Office in 2009.  He is the consistent presence at the front of the office and manages students, staff, and visitors coming in and out of the Academic Center as well as assisting with Career Services and the Guest Coaching Program.

Ally HartzellAlly Hartzell, Academic Counselor
Ally Hartzell was a diver on the Texas Women's Swimming and Diving Team from 2000-2004, earning Academic All-American honors and graduating with a B.A. in Human Ecology in 2004. She entered graduate school at UT Austin upon receiving a Pre-Emptive Recruitment Fellowship and earned an M.A. in Human Development and Family Sciences in 2006, while working as a teaching assistant.

Hartzell returned to UT Athletics in 2009 to serve as a mentor and tutor for student-athletes and became an academic counselor in 2010. Additionally, she coordinates hiring and payroll for part-time staff in the Student Services Office.  She is also currently pursuing her Doctorate in Sport Management at UT Austin.

As a student-athlete at Texas, Hartzell helped the Women's Swimming and Diving Team win four consecutive Big 12 Championships and was the individual conference champion on the 1-meter springboard in 2003. She competed in the NCAA Championships her last three years, earning four All-American Honorable Mention honors in the springboard events. Hartzell was an eight-time All-Big 12 Conference selection and two-time Big 12 Athlete of the month during her collegiate diving career. In 2004, Hartzell won the Academic MVP award for Women's Diving and was honored with the Lorene Rogers Scholar-Athlete Award, presented to the senior student-athlete with the highest overall GPA

Krista McKenneyKrista McKenney, Academic Counselor
Krista McKenney began with UT Athletics as a mentor in 2008, and became an academic counselor in the fall of 2009.

A community advocate for Caritas Austin, McKenney has previous experience in social work with at-risk students. She graduated from Texas A&M in 2006 and received her Master's in Social Work from UT Austin in 2009. McKenney works with students, study halls, the Academic Counselor Association, and the Measurement and Evaluation Center.

Jordenne ParkerJordenne Parker, Academic Counselor
Jordenne Parker graduated from UT Austin in 2011 with an undergraduate degree in Sport Management.

Parker began working with the Student Services Office in 2010. Parker currently helps manage books and other student resources for the Student Services Office, and she assists with events such as Student-Athlete Orientation, the Graduating Senior Luncheon, and the Academic Awards Presentation.

Krista McKenneyMonica Paull, Academic Counselor
Monica Paull began with the Student Services Office in 2011, after previously working within UT Athletics in the New Media Department.

Paull graduated in 2006 with a Communications degree from Boston University, where she was also a Women's Tennis letter winner from 2002-06. She received her Master's in Sports Leadership from Northeastern University in 2010.

In addition to academic counseling, Paull serves as the coordinator for all tutor appointments, and works with study hall and the academic tutors.

Jim SheltonDr. Jim Shelton, Academic Counselor
Dr. Jim Shelton is beginning his first year with the Student Services Office after seventeen years at Southwestern University. There he served as Head Baseball Coach, Academic Advisor, and Assistant Professor of Exercise and Sport Studies, as well as working in Athletics Development. Shelton has previously coached as an Assistant Baseball Coach at St. Edwards University (1986-89), Southwestern University (1989-91), and University of New Mexico (1992-95).

Dr. Shelton earned his undergraduate degree in Finance at St. Edward's University in 1985, his Master's in Sport Administration at UT Austin in 1988, and his Doctorate in Health, Physical Education, and Recreation with emphasis in Sport Psychology from the University of New Mexico in 1996.  He also completed his secondary school teaching certification in Physical Education from UT Austin in 1990.

In addition to his athletics-related duties at Southwestern, Shelton has been working on a documentary film about South Louisiana for PBS with fellow UT Austin employee, Don Howard (Radio, Television and Film).

Tina Taub-MontemayorDr. Tina Taub-Montemayor, Academic Counselor
Dr. Tina Taub-Montemayor previously mentored and tutored for student-athletes in UT Women's Athletics during her doctoral program from 1988-1991. She is returning to the Student Services Office after 25 years of service in Integrative Biology. There she served as Research Associate and Laboratory Manager for the Dean of the College of Natural Sciences.

Dr. Taub-Montemayor earned her undergraduate degree in Biology at The University of Texas at Austin in 1987 and her Doctorate in Zoology with a minor in Statistics from Educational Psychology in 1994. During her graduate tenure, she taught as a Teaching Assistant and Assistant Instructor for the School of Biological Sciences. She has published many primary research articles in her field, submitted numerous grants and has presented at national and international scientific conferences. She served as a supervisor in the academic lab setting for many undergraduate research interns including mentoring student interns from the nationally replicated UTeach program.

In addition to her duties in Integrative Biology, Taub-Montemayor has been teaching water fitness for the UT Fitness/Wellness program, is a Girl Scout leader volunteer, member of iForty and CareerSmart participant at UT Austin. Dr. Taub-Montemayor is married to Arnoldo Montemayor, an IT manager for Texas Parks & Wildlife Department and the couple has two daughters, Gabriella (14) and Carmen (11).

Lindsay VoylesLindsay Voyles, Academic Counselor
Lindsay Voyles earned her undergraduate degree in Sport Management from UT Austin. Voyles was a scholarship student-athlete on the Texas Women's Swimming and Diving Team. After graduating in 2008, she worked as an academic mentor with the Student Services Office.

Voyles earned her Master's in Education, with a focus on Sport Administration, from Xavier University in 2011. While at Xavier, she also interned in the Student-Athlete Services Office and worked with students in an academic setting and assisted with study hall coordination. Voyles works closely with Dr. Randa Ryan helping with students, the Consortium Program, and study halls.
